50 years of the European Union

I am half English and half Italian and my wife is half Welsh and half Czech, so we like to think of ourselves as good Europeans. Certainly I have consistently supported the Eurorean Union project and voted for UK membership in the referendum of 1975.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome which created what we now call the EU. It seems that more and more countries want to join – it now has 27 member states with a total population of almost 500 million people – and yet disillusionment with the project, especially among western Europeans, is substantial and growing.
So, what has the Eurpean Union ever done for us? This weekend, the “Guardian” newspaper offered an A-Z guide. P is for peace.
